Company history of SALZMANN AG ST. GALLEN

During SALZMANN AG ST.GALLEN's long company history, many offices, factories and sales agencies were opened and then closed again. For this reason, only the most important milestones are listed below:

1883 SALZMANN & Co. founded by Julius Salzmann at Geltenwilenstrasse 18 in St.Gallen. At that time, the business was involved in manufacture and trading in cotton yarns for St.Gallen\'s embroidery industry, which accounted for over 50% of Swiss exports at the turn of the century.

1934 A spinning and a doubling mill for cotton yarns founded in Budapest. This was nationalized by the government in 1950.

1942 In the middle of the Second World War, the manufacture of ready-made ladies and gentlemen\'s raincoats was started in St.Gallen. As a temporary measure, a blouse and shirt factory was also operated in Tessin. In 1980 the ready-made division was discontinued, due to it no longer being capable of competing with imports.

1947 An international organization for trading in cotton set up, with its own branches in Ghent, Hamburg, Milan, Paris, Tangiers and Vaduz. This trading organization was dissolved again during the period from 1956 to 1958.

1950 S.B.H. founded in Cape Town (spinning mill, weaving mill and equipment shop). In 1954, our associate, Ben Brunschweiler, left SALZMANN & Co. and took over S.B.H., together with the HÄMMERLE Company from Dornbirn.

1954 was a turbulent year for SALZMANN
On the 8th of April, Walter Salzmann was killed when his Comet airliner crashed near Naples, whilst he was on a business trip to South Africa.

Walter Salzmann was the son of the company's founder, but had no children of his own. His brother and his two sisters were not active in the running of the company.

1954 Max Künzli, who had been working for SALZMANN since 1945, took over management on Walter Salzmann\'s death.

SALZMANN AG ST.GALLEN was founded as a PLC. The shareholders consisted of the brother and two sisters of the late Walter Salzmann, plus Max Künzli.

1971 In this year Max Künzli purchased all shares from the late Walter Salzmann's brother and sisters and thus became the sole owner of SALZMANN AG ST.GALLEN.

1980 Salzmann MEDICO founded. As elastic stockings had been produced at Oscar Haag in Laupen (ZH) since as long ago as 1943, contacts were made over the years with doctors and more and more medical aids were added as product lines. Establishment of a separate trading division under the Salzmann MEDICO name was therefore advisable.

1989 VENOSAN ITALIA s.r.l. founded as a marketing company in Milan, for the sale of surgical support stockings in Italy.

1990 Operational management was taken over from Max Künzli by Daniel Künzli.

Daniel Künzli joined SALZMANN AG in 1973 and played a leading role in the setting up of Salzmann MEDICO.

Max Künzli remained as President of the Board of Directors until his death in 1994.
